East Wake Had A Special Visitor…

Mrs. Hirsch decided to treat her AP Government students to a special midterm this semester. She invited Brigadier General Anthony Tata, our Superintendent, to come participate in a seminar that would serve as their midterm. East Wake was honored that he made time to come and share first-hand accounts of the war.

During class, they discussed the wars in Iraq, Libya, and Vietnam. Superintendent Tata was very insightful as to the causes of war ad operations in the Middle East.  Students debated whether or not it was right to intervene in Libya, in addition to discussing the foreign policies of NATO, America and the UN.

The General had a successful and substantial military career, has written several books, and is doing his best to render Wake County more efficient. So far, he has done well. Thanks.

Every 15 minutes

Every 15 minutes someone dies from an alcohol related collision. The every 15 minute program started in the year 2001. It is indented to teach teens what will happen due to drinking and texting while driving. Life’s lessons are best learned through experience. But not in this case.

On the first day the “grim reaper” walks into a class and calls out a student’s name, which was selected by the entire student body. One student is removed from class every 15 minutes. Immediately a police officer walks in the classroom and reads an obituary which was written by the “dead” student’s parents. They explain the circumstances of their classmate’s demise and the contributions the student has made to the school and the community. a few minutes later the student walks in the classroom as the “living dead”, complete with white face make-up, a coroner’s tag, and a black Every 15 Minutes T-shirt. From that point the “victims” will not speak or interact with other students for the remainder of the school day. Uniformed officers will make mock death notifications to the parents of these children at their home, place of employment or business.

After lunch, there will be a simulated traffic collision, which will be viewable on the school grounds. (Rescue workers will treat the participating student as if they were really injured.)  All the students will experience first hand, the feeling of being involved in a tragic, alcohol-related & texting while driving collision. The coroner will look at the scene while the injured students will be extracted by the jaws-of-life manned by fire-fighters and paramedics. Police Officers will investigate, arrest, and book the student “drunk driver”. The students who participated will continue their experience by actually going to the morgue, the hospital emergency room, and the police department jail for the purpose of being booked for “drunk driving”.

At the end of the day, the students who participated in the staged accident, as well as those who were made-up as the “living dead” will be staying at a local hotel for an overnight student retreat. The retreat will simulate the separation from friends and family. A support staff of counselors and police officers will facilitate the retreat.

During the most powerful program of the retreat, the students will be taken through an audio – visualization of their own death. Then each student will write a letter to his or her parents starting out with . . .

Dear Mom and Dad, every fifteen minutes someone in the United States dies from an alcohol related traffic collision, and today I died. I never had the chance to tell you…….”

Parents will also be asked to write similar letters to their child. These letters will be shared the following day when students and parents will be reunited at a school assembly.

Here are some facts.

The group came to N.C. once, (March 24, 2008 Durham School of the Arts, Durham, NC)

12,998 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2007.

3.7 percent decline in drunk driving fatalities from 2006

More prepared to control or prevent alcohol problems

More confident teenager don’t drink and drive

Gas Prices

How do you feel about the gas prices?  Here is a perspective from our writer Dionica Warren

Gas has gone through the roof and not only does it affect parents, teachers, and other adults, but it also affects teenagers. As teenagers, we have jobs and responsibilities and if you have parents like mine they will make you pay for your own gas. But as teenagers, we don’t want to spend our money on gas, we want to hang out with our friends, shop and etc. Although we want to do those things, we need to sacrifice hanging out with our friends to put gas in our cars to drive to work. This way, adults don’t feel like you’re alone because you’re not! J And we just need to learn to deal with it because gas is expected to be $5.00 by 2012.

Spring’s Coming!

As many of you may know this winter has been one of the most costly, detrimental, and cold winters in a long time. Record amounts of snow fall have been recorded for every Northern state. Every state in the U.S. had recorded snowfall except Florida. What does this have to do with east wake though? We were fortunate and got snow during weekends or over Christmas break. We have to come back on Tuesday, February 22nd, originally a workday, which falls after Presidents Day on the 21st. We all hate make-up days, but at least it doesn’t cut into your spring break schedule. Everyone’s looking forward to spring break, beach trips, relaxing at your house, and maybe even cooking out. We have the week of April 18th-22nd off of school, and if you add the weekend to that, then technically we have 9 days off. So, be looking forward to the sunny days and leaving 20 degree weather behind!
